What is HotDocs?
HotDocs is an award-winning software application that
significantly reduces the time spent generating customized documents, such as
contracts, sales proposals, government and court forms, legal documents, loan
applications, and medical forms.
Using HotDocs, you can transform any PDF document or word
processor file into an interactive template by marking changeable text with
HotDocs variables. Then, the next time you want to generate a completed
form or text document, just assemble the interactive template you've created. As
you do this, you will be prompted for the information needed in the document and
that information will be merged into the document.
Example of a template library
Template libraries help you organize template files and provide quick access to
many HotDocs tools, such as the Assembly Queue,
HotDocs Options, and Component Manager.
Example of what you see when you open DIYD Legal's Library in HotDocs.
Example of answer library
Each client will have his or her own answer file allowing you to be as
descriptive as necessary when naming your files. The Answer File Manager
is a library of answer files. You can group answer files as well as sort them.
You can also view a history of when a specific answer file was used.
Example of an answer library
Begin here
As shown below, DIYD Legal Software Library has numerous folders
in the left panel with one template viewable, "Begin Process (Always begin
here)". When creating a new answer file for a new client you must start
by assembling this file. This is completed by selecting the "Begin Process
(Always begin here)"
template an
d double clicking or using the "Assemble" command button in the
toolbar:
You must start all new cases by
assembling this file. There are pertinent questions that must be answered for
each case that are only asked from this document, e.g. domestic partnership or
traditional marriage?
Assembling your first template
Start by highlighting the template as shown in the picture above. Select the
"Assemble"
option from the toolbar. The "Answer File" dialog will open as
shown below. When you assemble a document, you can use an existing answer file
from the drop down menu, or you can create a new, empty answer file for a new
client. Then, when you finish assembling the document, you can save your answers
and use them when assembling other documents.
The drop down list only shows answer files that have been opened on that
computer, you can import answer files then open them using the folder option
next to the dropdown menu.
